Our farmstead adventures

Heritage Breeds

We are a proud member of the Livestock conservancy. Saving America’s endangered breeds from extinction.

Rotational Grazing

We make it a priority to work with nature, instead of against.

Goats first

We start with our goats to clear the underbrush. They feed on the invasive species in the understory. Multiflora rose, oriental bittersweet, and autumn olive all work to choke out our native plant species. The goats gladly eat these invaders and clear out the understory to allow light to penetrate to the ground. Before they leave an area they drop manure on the ground to help fertilize new growth.

Pigs Next

The pigs are charged with pushing the forest waste back into the soil. As well as aerating the soil they expose dormant seeds to the surface encouraging new growth. They also trample or uproot different plants in the area allowing room for germination. This infuses the ground with a lot of carbon nutrients while allowing our pigs to act in every natural way they crave,

A Feathered Finish

After all our livestock has been through an area, we send in our birds. They scratch at the manure from the bigger livestock, spreading fertility and eating the fly eggs and larva that grow within the manure. Then the area is left to rest and regrow allowing the forest to regrow healthier than it was before.
