Spanish Goats
Spanish goats are a hardy breed brought over to North America by the Spanish in the 1500’s. From there the goats were introduced all over the Caribbean and Mexico. From there they became separated from their European cousins and have transitioned into something like a landrace breed unique to North America.
Our goats are Eclipse, solid black, and Wayne, brown with black lowlights. These boys work on our farm to clear the understory of noxious invasive plants such as multiflora rose and oriental bittersweet. They also help keep foliage from native grapes and spicebush from becoming so thick that it shades out other native plants like oak or hickory tree saplings. They are also the sires for the kids on our partner farm, Beespoke Farms, where all the girls are kept and raised on pasture.
We added our neighbors Nubian boys this year to help Eclipse and Wayne with their work. 50 acres is a lot for only those two!
